Not really, the wood was quite fresh. I can't wait 3 years for it to dry so I ulaulsy take cracks for granted (especially since this has corewood!). I find they add to the rustic feel, and they don't affect strength. Just start carving, cover up with plastic in between the work and apply the oils. Just keep it out of dry heat (fireplace, sunlight, central heating) for at least a year and you should be ok. Again it will crack a bit, but work wedth the cracks, not against it.
